Betty Jew

Betty Jew, the eldest child of Bill and Eva Bates, was brought up in the Anglican Church. In 1938, the family moved to Newcastle from North Queensland where Betty became a commercial artist for a women’s apparel store. Betty’s parents returned to North Queensland in 1944, to manage an outstation of the Yarrabah Aboriginal Mission. Betty joined them for a year and taught the local children.

The South Australian Museum Archives contains photographs and a Catalogue of an Exhibition of Aboriginal Studies by Betty Bates.
