Margaret Hollister's mother, Edith Wyly, lived on Thursday Island for a year in the 1920s with her uncle, William McFarlane. The photographs are said to have been taken by Wyly's mother Grace.
The South Australian Museum Archives contains 144 photographs from the Torres Strait Islands during the 1920s. Subjects include families, crafts, dance, church and landscapes.
