Coober Pedy, Woomera, Andamooka and Roxby Downs 2015

During 2015 our scientists will take their collections out of their cases, and Out of the Glass Case will visit Coober Pedy, Woomera, Andamooka and Roxy Downs. Using stories, collections and research from the South Australian Museum, students will be provided with free, interactive and memorable learning experiences that are suitable for all ages.

The dates that Out of the Glass case are visiting local communities are:

  •  Monday 27 April 2015 – Coober Pedy Area School
  • Tuesday 28 April 2015 - Woomera Area School
  • Wednesday 29 April 2015 – Andamooka Primary School
  • Thursday 30 April 2015 – Roxy Downs Area School.

The 2015 theme for Out of the Glass Case is ‘Treasures of the outback’, with the wonders of the local landscape providing a rich source of scientific exploration.

The program will include:

Tell Me a Story

Joing Emma for an interactive story time designed for younger children. These sessions centre on real objects from our collections and use story, song, dance and poetry to suprise and inspire.

Ages: Pre-school to year three
Duration: 30 minutes
Max: 25 students per group

Cyanotype workshops - the magic of light

Before photography was a widely used technique and well before the internet , there were other ways to accurately record and share images of specimens. In these workshops we use a cyanotype printing method to record found objects, such as leaves or feathers.

Ages: Years 2 - 7
Duration: 30 minutes
Max: 28 students per group

Fauna of salt lakes and more!

Join Peter Hudson, Collection Manager Entomology, as he helps students explore and learn about local animals, such as insects living on salt lakes.

Ages: Years 5 - 7
Duration: 30 minutes

3 dimensional design

Jo Bain, 3D Designer at the Museum, will talk about the Museum's upcoming exhibition and the technologies involved in creating it.

Earliest evidence of animal life on Earth

Join Felicity Coutts as she discusses unique pre-history that is preserved in our backyard. We have some of the earliest evidence of animal life on Earth, with the Ediacaran fauna (Flinders Ranges) and the Cambrian fauna (Emu Bay and Kangaroo Island).

Ages: Years 8 - 12
