Bird Section staff, Honoraries and volunteers conduct various collection-based and field research projects, the results of which are mostly published in the South Australian Ornithologist.
Current research projects include:

- An inventory of type specimens in the bird collection.
- Taxonomy and habitats of grasswrens of the Amytornis textilis-modestus complex.
- Bird chapter in the “Census of South Australian Vertebrates”.
- Breeding biology of the White-faced Heron.
