Associate Professor John Middleton: The Oceanography of our Southern Shelves and the Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System

SARDI Aquatic Sciences/Flinders University
Node Leader of the Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (SAIMOS)

Abstract:

Our southern shelves are exposed to oceanic currents that are driven by local and remote winds and strong seasonal changes in heating and evaporation. During summer, the south-easterly winds lead to the upwelling of deep, cold, nutrient-rich water off Kangaroo Island. These nutrients allow for the growth of tiny plants (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton/krill) that in turn provide food for much of the exotic marine life (sardines, tuna, seals, whales) found along our bountiful coasts.

In this talk, the dynamic physical drivers of these systems are outlined and illustrated using super-computer simulations of the physical environment. An outline is given of the $10M Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System that has been deployed to understand the climate and climate change of these systems.

The system is made up of cutting edge technologies that include underwater moorings, programmable marine gliders, acoustic curtains for tagged fish HF over the horizon RADAR.

The Night Sky

Ever wondered how astronomers navigate their way around the night sky? Come and learn how to find the different patterns (constellations) in the sky and find out about the mythology relating to these constellations. Learn about the nine planets (including Pluto) in our solar system, the spaceprobes that have visited them and some of the moons orbiting them. Discover the history behind astronomy and how early astronomers worked out the distances to stars, the magnitude of stars and more about the deep sky wonders of our galaxy. Learn about enigmatic objects such as black holes and what to look for when buying your first telescope. This popular course is designed for the adult beginner with no previous, or limited astronomical knowledge that would like to know more about the night sky and the wonders of the cosmos. This is one of the few courses in the world that has access to a Planetarium as a teaching tool.
