Charles Joseph Pound was born in 1866 in Harrow, England. Charles trained in laboratory technology at King's College, London. In 1893 he became the director of the Queensland Stock Institute in Brisbane, which was the first laboratory in Queensland/Australia dedicated to investigating diseases of any kind, animal or human. In 1899 Pound was appointed Government bacteriologist. Charles was one of Australia’s earliest scientists to investigate veterinary and medical diseases in Queensland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The only scientist in Australia producing tuberculin, used in diagnosing human and bone tuberculosis, he also carried out work on leprosy. Pound died in 1946 at Yeronga, QLD.
