Annotations include: "Plate 1"; "To be printed on plate"; "Frontispiece"; "RW Cilento del"; "To be returned to Dr RW Cilento Magill Road, Tranmere, South Australia"; in faint pencil "Checked by A. Rowe 1/6/20 OK"; stamped "General Secretary, Public Library & Art Gallery of South Australia"

  • Hand drawn diagram in the primary colours of red, yellow and green.

  • Relates to the sarcophagus in South Australian Museum's Egyptian collection, purchased by Rev William Roby Fletcher (1833-1894) in Egypt in 1890 who had been commissioned to collect archaeological antiquities. See reference to commision in "Egyptian Sketches" by Wm Roby Fletcher printed 1892,

This work by RW Cilento was sighted by A Rowe (1891-1968) (AA273), the Hon Custodian of Archaeological Collection, Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery, South Australia on 1 June 1920 (as per pencil annotation) and was to become the frontispiece of his 'A Guide to the Egyptian Antiquities in the South Australia Museum'. The work, although approved for publication by the Board of Governors of The Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery, remains, to date, unpublished.
