Goats on stations a source of milk. Visit Has[z]el Gaden’s buffalo-shooting camp at Ben’s Hole Lagoon (NT). Describes terrain and explains that buffalo hunting normally conducted from horseback but on the occasion of the author’s visit shooting done from the ground. Estimated over 20,000 buffalo on Marrakai and average kill over last ten years about 1,500 per annum. Hides valued at £1 each no other part of the animal used and hides shipped to Aden & Africa. Only males shot. Describes the hierarchy of who does what and the importance Gaden placed on being ‘acquainted with the temperarment of each man’ as blame or sympathy wrongly bestowed would impact on work ethos of that man. Gaden also employed a didjery-doo [didgeridoo] [didjeridu] player in his camp. Further describes the sound and material used to make the instrument.
