This item is a sepia photographic print mounted on board and depicting three Australian Aboriginal peoople wearing white face and body paint sitting and kneeling in front of a paper bark shelter. One of the subjects, an Australian Aboriginal man, is holding a decorated shield. Handwritten annotations on the reverse side read 'Native on [illegible] NW Australia, in mourning for dead. 1902'. There is a partial section of a note stuck to the reverse side of the board. The portion of the note that has been removed is also in the WB Sanders collection (AA 276/2/5). The note, which is in Sanders' handwriting, was written in 1951 and addressed to Norman Tindale.

It reads:

'Dear Mr Tindale, I do not know if the included photo will be of any interest to you. Natives in mourning, Ashburton District of NW Australia, 1904. I note a gun is in front of paper bark camp. Yours faithfully, WB Sanders'.
