A section of the note remains stuck to the photographic print (AA 276/2/4). The note is in Sanders' handwriting and was addressed to Norman Tindale.

It reads:

'Dear Mr Tindale, I do not know if the included photo will be of any interest to you. Natives in mourning, Ashburton District of NW Australia, 1904. I note a gun is in front of paper bark camp. Yours faithfully, WB Sanders'.

The note was written in 1951, when Sanders donated the photograph to the South Australian Museum.
