We acknowledge we are on Kaurna Miyurna land. The Dreaming is still living. From the past, in the present, into the future, forever.

Cultural Sensitivity Warning
It is a condition of use of the cultural components of the Museum Archives that users ensure that any disclosure of information contained in this collection is consistent with the views and sensitivities of Indigenous people. Users are warned that there may be words and descriptions that may be culturally sensitive and which might not normally be used in certain public or community contexts. Users should also be aware that some records document research into people and cultures using a scientific research model dating from the first half of the twentieth century, and depicts people as research subjects in ways which may today be considered offensive. Some records contain terms and annotations that reflect the author's attitude or that of the period in which the item was written, and may be considered inappropriate today in some circumstances. Users should be aware that in some Indigenous communities, hearing names of deceased persons might cause sadness or distress, particularly to the relatives of these people. Furthermore, certain totemic symbols may also have prohibitions relating to the age, initiation and ceremonial status or clan of the person who may see them. Records included may be subject to access conditions imposed by Indigenous communities and/or depositors. Users are advised that access to some materials may be subject to these terms and conditions that the Museum is required to maintain.

Board for Anthropological Research Expedition D 'D1 - 57 Koonibba Sociological Data' and 'D1 - 59 Koonibba Anthropological Data'

One card series containing sociological data, one card series containing anthropological data, and one series of paper slips containing anthropological data collected on the Board for Anthropological Research expedition to Koonibba, South Australia, in August 1928.

  1. D1 - D57 Koonibba Sociological Data
The series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, Sex, Age, Tribe, Location and Date; and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and profile portrait showing head and shoulders or head and torso. Most cards have ' Koonibba, West Coast, S.A.' and 'Aug. 1928' printed in Location and Date headings (although information on the borders of some prints suggest that some photographs were taken at Penong, South Australia). The the borders of some photographs contain some extra information on individuals, apparently recorded by NB Tindale. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 57. Cards have (expedition symbol) D written in the top left hand corner. There are multiple cards on some individuals. There are two notes at the end of the card series: one photocopy of information about Dick Wombat and Annie Wombat; the second noting missing photos, cards and slips (possibly at 1958).

  2. D1 - D59 Koonibba Anthropological Data
This series comprises typed paper slips on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, White Name, Where born, Tribe, Totem (changed on some slips to Class), and details of parents, sublings and children, and Remarks. Under the last category some paper slips record extra information, such as comments on an individual or social practice. This series contains paper slips on individuals numbered 1 to 51. These slips are in NB Tindale's hand.

  3. D1 - D59 Koonibba Anthropological Data
This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, White Name, Native Name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe and Totem. A second section contains physical measurements and observations, and the reverse of the card records further physical measurements and observations. This series contains cards on individual numbered 1 to 40. Some cards are missing from the series. The cards record that data was collected 15 - 20 August 1928 at Koonibba and 21-22 August 1928 at Penong.
