Original Watercolour
There is one original watercolour within this frame.
Notes: The notable chief Te Rauparaha is seated, wrapped in a European blanket that was worn in the same manner as a Maori cloak. Rauparaha has a moko (traditional Maori facial tattoo) and a tuft of white feather in his left ear. A mere pounamu (greenstone hand club) with a flax wrist chord sits at the base of his blanket. The standing figure is Katu, Te Rauparaha's son also known by his baptismal name Tamihana (Thompson). He holds a long spear in his hand and wears a hieke-pokinikini (cloak) that is predominantly covered with flax tags that have been scraped and dyed at intervals and red woollen pompoms added.
