Original Watercolour

Notes: This detail from the door of a whata (elevated storehouse) came from the Hokianga district. Central to this detail is a carved figure with a moko (traditional Maori facial tattoo) and holding a putorino (flute). This figure is surrounded by mania heads (guardians) inlaid with paua (sea snail) shell eyes and takarangi spirals along its edge. The carving pattern is referred to as raupongo.
