This series includes the following ethnographic data compiled or received by the Society:

1. Typescript copy, with pencil corrections by NB Tindale (see AA 338), of 'Bibliography of Aborigines of South and Central Australia, covering the period 1920-1929'; also typescript copy of 'Supplement to "List of works relating to Australian and Tasmanian Natives" in the New York Public Library, December 1, 1926'.
   
   
2. Manuscript notes and extracts from published works relating to Aboriginal childbirth practices and message sticks.
   
   
3. Manuscript notes by CP Mountford (see AA 228) on different types of Aboriginal shelters and dwellings, including references to shelters on the Coorong, the Murray River, the Mid-North of South Australia, Coopers Creek, North-West South Australia and various localities in the Northern Territory. Also includes some brief notes by P Stapleton on Ngarrindjeri shelters.
   
   
4. Manuscript notes by CP Mountford on rock engravings and stone arrangements in the Yunta and Weroonee (Waroonie) Range area, including references to sites on Wabricoola Station, Yunta Springs, Salt Creek on Panaramittee Station, Winninowie Creek, Mannahill and Paratoo.
   
   
5. Correspondence and notes from HL Sheard (1926, see AA 290). Two letters from Sheard to NB Tindale dated 13 July 1926 and 20 July 1926 provide some details of Sheard's investigations of Aboriginal rock art sites on the South Para River, South Australia. The letter dated 13 June 1926 also refers to a young Aboriginal man from Ooldea, Mickie, who has been staying at Sheard's home. Sheard recorded some physical measurements of this man. There is also a typescript copy of a talk that Sheard gave to the Society on 22 November 1926 providing details on some of the rock art sites he had investigated on the South Para River, and at Jutland (Marne River), Devon Downs, Morowie and Wabricoola.
   
   
6. Manuscript notes by Dr R Pulleine, dated 23 May 1927, on Aboriginal use of drugs and medicines.
   
   
7. Miscellaneous correspondence, including a letter from LR Ridell, dated 27 February 1928, which provides some information on Aboriginal sites on Durham Downs Station, a letter from LC Gee, dated 2 December 1926, providing some details on the discovery of Aboriginal skeletal remains at Burnside, South Australia, a manuscript note from Gee, dated 27 September 1926 about Aboriginal use of message sticks in the Northern Territory, a letter from F Spencer at Kooringa, dated 12 February 1930, providing some details of his work recording Aboriginal engraving sites at Deep Creek near Burra, and a letter from J Way at Ooldea to TD Campbell (AA 52), dated 10 October 1926 providing some information on the Aboriginal people at Ooldea and their use of message sticks.
   
   
8. Correspondence (1926-1928) between NB Tindale and 'honorary corresponding members' of the Society including HA Longman (Director, Queensland Museum), WW Thorpe (Australian Museum), AG Bolam (Station-master at Kingoonya, See AA 640) and LR Riddell (Principal, Broken Hill Technical College).
   
   
9. Draft questionnaires compiled by NB Tindale to be sent out to 'honorary corresponding members' on topics such as Aboriginal use of watercraft, dwellings, fire, rock art, burial customs and beliefs in magic.
   
   
10. Correspondence (1926-c1927) from G Aiston (see AA 3) at Mulka in response to questionnaires from NB Tindale. In some notes dated 19 October 1926, Aiston provides information on the Aboriginal use of message sticks and smoke signals and some information on Aboriginal childbirth practices in the Coopers Creek area. A letter to Tindale from Aiston dated 12 March 1927 provides some information on Aboriginal beliefs concerning 'magic stones' in the Coopers Creek area and in an undated typescript he provides additional detailed data on magical beliefs and practices. Aiston also provides typescript notes on Aboriginal burial practices, games and fishing techniques. Aiston's data relates mainly to the 'Wonkonguru', 'Dieri' and 'Yaurorka' tribes of the Lake Eyre region. In an undated note Aiston provides some information on rock art sites in the Tarcoola area, including one site that was shown to him by a Kokatha man, Melie.
    
    
11. Correspondence (1926-1927) from L Reece at Minnie Downs Station. Reece's letter to NB Tindale dated 29 October1926 provides some information on Aboriginal use of message sticks, smoke signals and childbirth practices. Another letter to Tindale dated 16 December 1926 provides additional details on Aboriginal use of smoke signals. On 14 July 1927 Reece provided some information in response to Tindale's questionnaire on Aboriginal fishing techniques and Aboriginal games. Note that there is additional ethnographic data from L Reece in Cleland Collection (AA 60).
    
    
12. Replies from HW Christie to NB Tindale's questionnaires. Christie provides information on the Larrakia tribe (Northern Territory) relating to childbirth practices, smoke signals, magic and burial practices.
    
    
13. Typescript notes by Dr HK Fry (AA 105) relating to funeral beliefs and customs of the Aboriginal people of Melville and Bathurst Islands (Northern Territory).
    
    
14. Newspaper clippings (c1928-29) relating to the effects on the Aboriginal people of the severe drought affecting Central Australia at that time.
    
    
15. Two black and white photographs (10x8 cm) of Aboriginal skeletons in process of excavation (no other details available).
