The start of the author's trip out from Darwin and the characters and the people he encounters. Refers to the Malarial Survey of the Victoria River District to be conducted by Dr Anson and Dr Fenton. The arrival of the aviationist Jean Batten in Katherine on 24 May 1934 on a refuelling stop on her return flight from England. Departure from Katherine to Manbullo Station on the truck brought down by Anson on train.
