Premier Steven Marshall said Mr Cheater’s appointment to the position was a great result for the beloved South Australian institution.

“For generations, the South Australian Museum has been such a huge presence in the lives of locals, as well as interstate and international visitors.

“I am delighted to welcome Mr Cheater as the new Board Chair – his business acumen, insight and passion will be a major asset as the Museum enters the next chapter of its rich history.”

Mr Cheater says, “The South Australian Museum is a vital part of the culture of our great State. It has a key role to educate, excite and inspire - to learn from the past and reimagine our future. I am honoured to take on this role at such an important time in the Museum's ongoing story.”

“The South Australian Museum has a critical role to play in the development of the new Aboriginal Art and Cultures Centre at Lot Fourteen and this will present many new opportunities for the Museum. I am looking forward to working with the team to continue to build on the great legacy we have been given and to have a significant impact for future generations," Mr Cheater adds.

Director of the South Australian Museum, Mr Brian Oldman, says the Museum is delighted to have someone so highly-regarded in the business community join as Board Chair.

“Beyond Mr Cheater’s impressive and diverse professional experience, his commitment to diversity, inclusion and reconciliation represents a true alignment with the values of the South Australian Museum,” says Mr Oldman.

“I look forward to working with him as we steer the Museum through future years of change and achievement on our mission to inspire wonder and curiosity about life on Earth,” adds Mr Oldman.

Mr Cheater commences his first three-year term as South Australian Museum Board Chair on 12 November 2020.
