Archive Collections / Dr Norman Barnett Tindale / Series AA338/05 / Photographs relating to Cape York, North Queensland Expedition, 1926-1927.
Supplementary to 'Journal of a Museum Trip to Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland by Norman B. Tindale. Nov. 1926 - March 1927. Adelaide, S.A'. (AA338/1/4).

This item includes two volumes of photographic material consisting of b/w photographic prints, contact prints and acetate negatives. The photographic material is supplementary to Norman Barnett Tindale's 'Journal of a Museum Trip to Cape York Peninsula North Queensland Nov. 1926-March 1927' (AA 338/1/4). The expedition was led by Herbert Mathew Hale (see AA 124) and was authorised by the Board of Governors on 3 November 1926. The journey commenced on 7 December of the same year. On the way to Flinders Island, the party stopped in Melbourne, Sidney, Brisbane, Cairns and Kurranda. Photographs from these locations are available in Vol. 2 of this item. Vol. 1 contains photographs taken at Flinders Island, Stanley Island, Bathurst Head, Barrow Point, Port Stewart, Stewart River, and Princess Charlotte Bay.

The aim of the expedition was to collect entomological, zoological and anthropological data. The anthropological research concerning the indigenous population in the area included records on: groups, their languages and boundaries; social organisation and totems, marriage, burial, and mourning customs, initiation and ceremonial life; material culture, weapons and canoes, and so forth. Some recordings were made on the subject of physical anthropology, however, no detailed measurements of people were obtained.

The photographs collated in the two volumes of this item are illustrations of the abovementioned activities with particular focus on the expedition party's work between January 1927 and March 1927. A number of these photographs were published in Herbert Matthew Hale's and Norman B Tindale's 'Aborigines of Princess Charlotte Bay, North Queensland Pt. 1', Records of the South Australian Museum. 5(1):64-116, and 'Aborigines of Princess Charlotte Bay, North Queensland, Pt. 2', Records of the South Australian Museum. 5(2):117-172. These publications were used to provenance unidentified photographs. Some photographs were previously identified by an unknown person as relevant to the Cape York expedition. As there were no further references available, this identification has been accepted as a correct one.

During the Cape York expedition NB Tindale and Herbert Matthew Hale recorded their first motion picture: 'Natives of Princess Charlotte Bay, 1927, N. Q. ', reels 1 - 2. There are copies available in the South Australian Museum Archives.

Please note Tindale's abbreviations: Pr. C. Bay, Pr. Charlotte Bay (Princess Charlotte Bay); I, Is (Island); Pt (Port as in Port Stewart and Point as in Barrow Point); Mack R. (Mack River); Q, Qu (Queensland); NQ., N.Q. (North Queensland); W (West); Jan (January); Feb (February); Tr. (Tribe); Fig. (Figure); Dup (Duplicate); pubd (published).
