One card series containing sociological data and one card series containing anthropological data collected on the University of California at Los Angeles and University of Adelaide Anthropological Expedition of 1952-1954 (these cards have (expedition symbol) R printed or written in the top left hand corner); and one card series containing sociological data and one card series containing anthropological data collected in Darwin between 28 February and 3 March, 1954 (these cards are marked 'RD').
The University of California at Los Angeles and University of Adelaide Anthropological Expedition travelled through South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory between October 1952 and July 1954. The expedition was in two parties which had slightly different iteneraries and which met up at Mount Margaret, in Western Australia. In one party were NB Tindale and DM Tindale, in the other JB Birdsell and EM Birdsell and PJ Epling. Data was collected on approximately 1,800 people during this survey.
Note that there are complementary series of data cards relating to this expedition in Birdsell, AA 689/9/16, and that these cards contain additional sociological information. Note also that a name database for this series of cards exists and can be accessed at the South Australian Museum Archives.
For further information on the expedition see AA 338 Tindale and AA 689 Birdsell, particularly AA 338/1/19/1-2 (Tindale's expedition journals), and AA 689/1/2 (Birdsell's 'Daily Field Journal').
Note that within any given series the amount of data recorded varies from card to card.
Note that most cards have data recorded under the heading 'Tribe' (in the Sociological Data series) and 'Own Tribe' (in the Anthropological Data series). In the descriptions which follow, any information under 'Tribe' relating to the (subject numbered) individual in the Sociological Data series only has been reproduced. Note that some cards also record data under 'Tribe' for kin of the individual.
Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted in square brackets. At the end of this series an attempt has been made to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies); however, this has not been possible in all cases.
R1 - 1885 UCLA Sociological Data
This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Name, Sex, Age, Effage, Loc.[ation], Tribe, Date, and Remarks (over); and which have space for two photographs. 'JB Birdsell and NB Tindale University of California (Los Angeles) and University of Adelaide Anthropological Expedition, 1952-1954' is also printed on the front of each card. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and a profile portrait showing head and torso. The photographs also show (individual subject) numbers and state. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 1885. Numbered slips have been inserted to indicate missing cards.
The cards are organised in (individual subject) number order by field station. In the listing which follows, the number preceding the place name indicates the numbers allocated to individuals from whom data was collected at that at that field station. The dates have been drawn from the cards and added as a reference aid.
The cards are preceded by three cards of notes and corrections in NB Tindale's hand. Note that this series of cards appears to have been compiled some time after the date of the expedition.
Following the R series cards is the RD series of cards. Note that these cards do not have photographic prints attached. These cards are in the same format as the R series Sociological Data cards.
