Drawer 1 of 3. The cards in this drawer relate to Tindale's major collection of parallel vocabularies. Begun during the Harvard and Adelaide (H-A) Universities Anthropological Expedition of 1938-9, they were added to over subsequent years. Tindale gathered numbers 1-110 of his Australian Vocabularies during the H-A expedition. Numbers 112-142 were gathered during the University of California at Los Angeles and University of Adelaide (UCLA-UA) Anthropological Expedition to North-Western Australia in 1952-4 (see Tindale's 'Australian Vocabularies', 1938-63, AA 338/8/5, and journals AA 338/1/15/1-2, AA 338/1/19/1-4 for further details). The cards are arranged alphabetically under an English head word. Cards carrying a particular head word appear in one of three subgroups: a parallel section, an 'odd sheet' section and a Tasmanian section. To illustrate this, consider the English word 'camp'. Under this head word the first section contains Aboriginal equivalents in parallel across vocabularies 1-147. Then appears an 'odd sheet', containing 'camp' equivalents drawn from various genealogies taken by Tindale. Finally, there follows a Tasmanian section drawn from Edward Micklethaite Curr's Australian Race, 1886-7. Note that the cards in this section are larger than Tindale's usual cards (20.3x12.7 cm).
